The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is an admissions assessment used by independent schools for students applying to Grades 2–12. The appropriate test level is determined by the grade to which the student is applying.
For students taking the Lower, Middle, or Upper Level ISEE, the test includes five sections:
When Can Students Take the ISEE? The ISEE is offered throughout the year. Students may test once during each of the three testing seasons—Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer—for a maximum of three times per school year. Families should check the application and score-submission deadlines for each school before selecting a test date. Why Is the ISEE Challenging? The ISEE is a fast-paced test taken by a competitive group of students applying to independent schools. Several grade levels may take the same version of the exam, so students may encounter questions that feel unfamiliar or more advanced than their usual schoolwork. Students must also complete the math sections without a calculator unless one has been approved as an accommodation. Strong pacing, flexible problem-solving, and familiarity with the question formats are essential.
