With the school year coming to a close, high school students have a long summer break stretching out before them. While a few months off from formal classes is absolutely warranted, this time also provides an outstanding opportunity for enrichment, exploration, and self-discovery.

As parents, you can help guide your high schooler toward spending their summer in meaningful, productive ways that foster personal growth and lifelong skills. From career exploration to volunteering, creative pursuits to college prep - there's no shortage of engaging activities to pique your teen's interests and curiosities.

Enriching Summer Ideas for High Schoolers

Career Immersion Through Internships or Job Shadowing
Help your student gain first-hand exposure to professions or industries they're interested in by finding internship opportunities or setting up job shadowing experiences.

A Head Start on College Applications and Essays
Tackle those daunting applications over the summer by giving your high schooler dedicated time to research schools, work on personal statements, and apply for scholarships.

Volunteering and Community Engagement
Look for ways your teen can give back through volunteerism at local charities, hospitals, special needs camps, community clean-ups, and more.

Fun Skill-Building Workshops
From coding and graphic design to cooking, photography, public speaking, and more - enroll your high schooler in classes that allow them to develop marketable talents.

Dive Into a Creative Passion Project
Is your high schooler a writer, artist, filmmaker, or musician? Give them the time and space to work on passion projects like novels, artwork, videos, or compositions.

Language Immersion Opportunities
Learning a second (or third!) language looks incredible on college applications and broadens cultural perspectives. Explore classes, apps, conversation circles, and more.

Informative College Visits & Tours
While school's out, visit universities your student is interested in to get a feel for the campuses and student life they offer.

Summer Tutoring & SAT Prep
Additionally, the summer presents an excellent window to get a jumpstart on academics through tutoring and test prep. Consider signing your student up for SAT/ACT prep courses to raise their scores and improve their college admissions prospects. Or secure a subject tutor to reinforce areas of struggle or preview material for challenging fall courses. Getting ahead during the summer can relieve academic stress once the busy school year resumes.

With some guidance and encouragement, your high schooler can have an incredibly formative, productive, and memorable summer. Fuel their interests and support their ambitions through enriching activities and experiences!  An amazing summer awaits!
