With the school year coming to a close, high school students have a long summer break stretching out before them. While a few months off from formal classes is absolutely warranted, this time also provides an outstanding opportunity for enrichment, exploration, and self-discovery.

As parents, you can help guide your high schooler toward spending their summer in meaningful, productive ways that foster personal growth and lifelong skills. From career exploration to volunteering, creative pursuits to college prep - there's no shortage of engaging activities to pique your teen's interests and curiosities.

Enriching Summer Ideas for High Schoolers

Career Immersion Through Internships or Job Shadowing
Help your student gain first-hand exposure to professions or industries they're interested in by finding internship opportunities or setting up job shadowing experiences.

A Head Start on College Applications and Essays
Tackle those daunting applications over the summer by giving your high schooler dedicated time to research schools, work on personal statements, and apply for scholarships.

Volunteering and Community Engagement
Look for ways your teen can give back through volunteerism at local charities, hospitals, special needs camps, community clean-ups, and more.

Fun Skill-Building Workshops
From coding and graphic design to cooking, photography, public speaking, and more - enroll your high schooler in classes that allow them to develop marketable talents.

Dive Into a Creative Passion Project
Is your high schooler a writer, artist, filmmaker, or musician? Give them the time and space to work on passion projects like novels, artwork, videos, or compositions.

Language Immersion Opportunities
Learning a second (or third!) language looks incredible on college applications and broadens cultural perspectives. Explore classes, apps, conversation circles, and more.

Informative College Visits & Tours
While school's out, visit universities your student is interested in to get a feel for the campuses and student life they offer.

Summer Tutoring & SAT Prep
Additionally, the summer presents an excellent window to get a jumpstart on academics through tutoring and test prep. Consider signing your student up for SAT/ACT prep courses to raise their scores and improve their college admissions prospects. Or secure a subject tutor to reinforce areas of struggle or preview material for challenging fall courses. Getting ahead during the summer can relieve academic stress once the busy school year resumes.

With some guidance and encouragement, your high schooler can have an incredibly formative, productive, and memorable summer. Fuel their interests and support their ambitions through enriching activities and experiences!  An amazing summer awaits!

Stop the Summer Slide: Avoiding Learning Loss Over Summer Break

As the school year winds down, visions of summer vacation start dancing in every student's head. Endless days of sleeping in, lounging by the pool, and nights staying up late quickly replace thoughts of homework and tests. While a much-deserved break from the daily academic grind is absolutely necessary, the unstructured summer months can lead to something called the "summer slide" - a loss of essential skills and knowledge that were gained during the previous school year.

What Exactly Is the Summer Slide?
The summer slide, also referred to as "summer learning loss," refers to the decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the extended break from the classroom. It's been well-documented that students perform better on standardized tests at the end of summer compared to right after summer vacation.

Why does this summer slide happen? Simply put, it's a case of "use it or lose it." If students aren't actively reinforcing the literacy, math, and cognitive abilities they've developed, those skills become rusty. By the time kids head back to school, they've fallen behind and valuable weeks can be spent re-learning concepts and material they've forgotten.

Avoiding the Summer Backslide
While the summer slide is a real risk, the good news is that it's also highly preventable with a bit of planning and follow-through. Here are some tips to keep your child's mind engaged and reduce summer learning loss:

Maintain Reading Habits - Developing strong reading skills provides a vital foundation for all other areas of learning. Over the summer, continue reading out loud to younger children on a daily basis. Older kids should be encouraged to read independently for at least 20 minutes per day - whether getting lost in their favorite fiction series or reading articles on topics that interest them. Following along in the book as you read out loud or discussing what they've read can further reinforce comprehension.

Explore Math in Everyday Life - You encounter all sorts of opportunities to apply math skills in your everyday life, from calculating distance and measurements to working through word problems at the grocery store. Point these moments out and have your child practice by doing the mental math. Math workbooks, online games, and even cooking activities can help keep those numeracy muscles flexed.

Try STEM Activities and Educational Games - Thanks to the abundance of educational websites and apps, it's easier than ever to incorporate fun, game-based learning activities into your summer routine. Hands-on building projects, science experiments, coding games, and puzzles engage different parts of a child's brain compared to traditional schoolwork. Look for products designed by trusted child educational experts.

Sign Up for a Summer Learning Program - Whether hiring a private tutor or enrolling in an academic summer camp, structured learning programs are an excellent way to review material from this past year and preview content for the year ahead. Students benefit from personalized instruction tailored to their level and needs. A good tutor can make learning feel more like mental exploration than drudgery!

With a bit of creativity and commitment, you can make this summer vacation a striking success - allowing your child to recharge their battery through rest and recreation, while still maintaining their all-important academic skills. Instill a mindset that learning happens everywhere and prevent the summer slide!
